What is

psychomotor relaxation ?

Psychomotor relaxation is a therapeutic method which aims to relieve various ailments by working jointly on the mind, body and spirit.

This approach is based on the concept of the influence of psychological factors on the functioning of the body and offers relaxation techniques to promote overall balance.

It relies on relaxation, movement and body mediation techniques in order to work on the body image, motor skills, muscle tone, emotional regulation and relationships with oneself and others.

It is practiced by psychomotor therapists and can be integrated into multidisciplinary monitoring to support various psychomotor, psychological and somatic problems.

Why follow psychomotor relaxation sessions ?

The main objective of psychomotor relaxation is to restore harmony between the mind and the body.

Many symptoms and disorders can be relieved using this approach, such as:

  • anxiety and phobias;
  • muscle tension;
  • sleep disorders;
  • psychomotor disorders;
  • behavioral disorders;
  • child development disorders;
  • attention disorders with or without hyperactivity (ADD/ADHD);
  • learning difficulties.

It can also be used to support people suffering from mental disorders, somatic disorders or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The benefits

of psychosomatic relaxation

By regularly practicing psychosomatic relaxation techniques, individuals can learn to:

  • better manage stress;
  • let go of their negative emotions;
  • develop a state of inner serenity.

Relaxation sessions allow you to connect to your body, to your unconscious, and to become aware of any psychosomatic tensions present.

Psychomotor relaxation thus promotes awareness of bodily sensations, bodily expression, sensory awakening, emotional regulation, stabilization of muscle tone and stress management. It also allows you to work on the relationship with the body, the image of the body, the relationship with others and the relationship with space.

A psychomotor assessment is often carried out beforehand in order to assess the person’s motor, sensory and psychomotor abilities and to determine the therapeutic objectives.

In conclusion

The body is the emitter of messages that the psychomotor therapist and her patient will try to decipher together during psychomotor relaxation. This work allows the person to reconcile with themselves by making them see new possibilities.

In psychomotor therapy, relaxation is above all a bodily experience of relaxation and awareness of the body, towards the verbalization of feelings !
