Although rare, complications exist in any surgical procedure, including cataracts. Ophthalmic surgeon Dr Stéphanie Zwillinger explained the details of this operation to journalist Esther Buitekant for Femme Actuelle.
Side effects and complications of cataract surgery
Cataract surgery is common and generally safe, but like any surgical procedure, it has side effects and potential complications.
Common side effects include:
- sensitivity to light;
- itching;
- slight pain around the operated eye.
These symptoms of complications of cataract surgery usually disappear within a few days.
Some people may experience fluctuations of the vision for several weeks after surgery, which is usually temporary.
Following the eye surgeon’s post-operative instructions and attending all follow-up appointments is essential to minimize risks and effectively manage potential complications.
The rarest complications of cataract surgery
Among the possible complications, eye infection, although rare, is one of the most serious.
Signs include: severe pain, persistent redness and blurred vision.
The other possible symptoms of complications of cataract surgery are :
- posterior capsular opacification, a type of secondary cataract that can occur months or years after surgery. It is easily treated with a laser.
- retinal detachment problems, characterized by the sudden appearance of flashes of light or floaters in the field of vision;
- macular edema can occur, leading to swelling of the central retina and blurred vision. This problem is often treated with anti-inflammatories;
- high intraocular pressure, especially if there is a history of glaucoma. This phenomenon can be controlled with medication;
- In rare cases the artificial lens may become misaligned, requiring further intervention to correct the position.
If these symptoms appear, it is crucial to consult your eye surgeon immediately, or go to an eye emergency room.
